This workshop is ideal for beginners who has bought a Nikon DSLR camera and do have a basic working knowledge of the operation of the camera. It is ideal for those wanting to have a better feel and an in depth understanding of the creative modes available with the DSLR and looking to have a stronger approach to photography. It offers photographers an understanding of the importance of the balance of techniques and the art in taking pictures.

Participants will learn the digital camera terminology and have an in depth understanding of the operation of the camera. Hands on instructions and practical sessions are critical at every step of this workshop.

Hobbyists, beginners wanting to be more creative and to discover their own approaches in their photography will find this 5 hours workshop most useful.

Seeing, in the finest and broadest sense means using your senses, your intellect and your emotions. It means encountering your subject matter with your whole being. It means looking beyond the labels of things and discovering the world around you. If you find that, your images often lack the ‘wow’ factor, or as if you can see, ‘a good picture’ but you just cannot capture that moment or composition, as you want it? Now is the time to break through those barriers and free yourself to explore and capture what has previously felt out of reach.

This workshop is tailored for photographers wanting to break through those barriers, learning the approaches, and discovering how to utilize an open-minded, creative approach to photography that breaks stereotypical barriers and methodology. Fieldtrips, classroom critiques and reviews of works are included in this 5 hours workshop.

Pre-requisites: General basic working photography knowledge is required. For those who have completed Photo 1 and Photo 2.

Results of Nikon Photo Contest ‘A Celebration of Colours, Culture & Heritage with Nikon’

1,671 entries were received after the closing date on March 31, 2010 with 1, 466 from the open category and 205 from the school children/youth category. The judging was held on April 5^th, the judges were Mirco Lazzari, our guest Sports Photographer (Italy), Azrul Abdullah, Ng Kok Leong and Hadzme Mohd Jaafar.

Winners for the open category are 1^st prize Low Yong Seng (Johor), 2^nd prize Yaman Ibrahim (Selangor) and 3^rd prize Mohd Ghazali Kori (Terengganu).

Consolation prizes are: Ng Choo Kuan (Perak), Lin Joe Yin (Selangor) and Siti Khadijah bt Kamarudin (Selangor).

Winners of the school children/Youth category are: 1^st prize Lim Tau Won (Kuala Lumpur), Kwok Zhe Yan (Selangor) and 3^rd prize Foo Seh Kai (Johor)

Nikoners Walk About

This monthly program allows Nikoners to experience, share and exchange hands on instructions and feedbacks on the usage of the camera. It will also allow users to meet one another of the same interest group to gather information and exchange interests of places, subjects, ideas of photography and a feedback session for the formation of special interest groups to cater for different levels and interest among users.

This will be an ongoing monthly event, where, Nikoners begins from a place of not knowing what photographers need to know to make what photographers make as ‘art’. In this spirit of not knowing, we attempt to create an environment in which a range of interests and influences can be brought together. This get together is open and with flexibility, to create opportunity for participants and contributors to invent scenarios and possibilities for how to speak and learn together.

"Lights and myths" is a group exhibition embodying the vision that captures the capricious rhythm of our cityscape. After the completion of the "Mapping Invisible Cities" project supported by the Goethe-Institut in June 2009, 13 local photographers who wanted to share their own personal vision of the city came together to form the "Beyond the concept of city photography" project. This project was initiated and led by local curator and photographer Alex Moh together with Azrul K. Abdullah and Kelvin Chan under the support of the Goethe-Institut. Its aim is to open doors for young photographers to explore new possibilities, experimentation and celebrate freedom and spontaneity in exploring new ways to photograph urban subjects. This body of works is the outcome of a 5-month long continuous dialogue, sharing and reflection between the photographers on their own interpretation of the cityscape.

Participating photographers include Assakhof Ab. Satar, Chong Yuk Jye, Faz Kamaruddin, Karthikeyan Rajamanickam, Liew Lee Yook, Lim Li-Ling, Lim Thian Leong, Michael Thessel, Nadia Jasmine Mahfix, Nur ‘Atiqah R., Raja Indra Putra Ismail, Shafina Sheridan and Tan Chee Hon.

On January 18th, to celebrate the launching of the Nikon Centre Kuala Lumpur and the collaboration of Nikon (Malaysia) Sdn Bhd with Futuromic Photo Av Sdn Bhd, a photo contest with the theme ‘A Celebration of Colors, Culture and Heritage with Nikon’ was organised to commemorate the occasion.

1,671 entries were received after the closing the closing date on March 31, 2010.

This exhibition will display the winners of the contest for both the open (adult) and school children/Youth category from the contest.

K. Azril Ismail; an MA in Art graduate from UiTM, Malaysia & earned his BFA from Columbus College of Art & Design, USA, is currently lecturing for the Photography Department for the Faculty of Art & Design, UiTM & also an active visual artist whom was known for his documentation of now-demolished site of the Pudu Prison of Kuala Lumpur. His current portfolio was extended further when he accomplished his first phase locomotive culture of Sentul & publication of “Project IDOM: The Next Stop” & the “Iron Dragons of Malaya”

He is now currently preparing his new portfolio & publication of the second phase of "Project IDoM", the Pudu Jail, & the Forensic Clinical Research for the upcoming year. He had participated in many exhibition spaces, since his first solo exhibition at the Wei Ling Gallery.

In this session of slide show and talk, Azril will share with us his experiences in his documentation work of the Pudu Jail, the Iron Dragons of Malaya and his ongoing works at the mortuary.

Members of the critic panel will review selected images from the participants and share their thoughts on the reading of the images. It is an ideal platform for participants to have their works revealed and seek opinions on their works. Forum members are by invitation. Participants must submit 3 to 5 images to enjoy the session. This is an open mentoring program for serious amateurs and emerging photographers by the members of the Nikon teaching advisory panel.

A theme will be revealed for the Nikon International Photo Contest 2010/11 and the selected participants will get to prepare their images through this program for the competition. Besides, the group will be involved in other photography project s this year, later follow by exhibitions and publications of their selected images. Participants will have to meet regularly, once a month at the Centre to present their works for critic and selection.

A good working knowledge of photography is required, participants are required to discuss, willing to work on their images, and open to criticism of their works, with only a limited number of participants will be selected for the projects. Interested Nikon-ers will need to turn up for the first session discussion at the date stated above.

Calling all Nikoners! Sends us your best shots of Malaysian landscape that you have taken and we will select the best images, and have them exhibited at our photo gallery at the Centre later this year. An exhibition pamphlet will accompany the works during the exhibition period of 6 weeks. After the exhibition, all the prints will be returned to respective photographers.

The theme for this first chapter is Malaysian Landscapes that includes seascapes, city and townscapes, or you can interpret what you would picture as a ‘landscape’. To participate, send us each image in low res of not more than 1MB in jpeg file for our selection. If your image is selected, we will reward you with a gift from our Centre.

The Singapore International Photography Festival (SIPF) committee would like to thank everyone for their support and enthusiastic participation in last 3 months. As we move into the second week of March, we would like to remind you that the worldwide open call for submission for SIPF 2010 will close on 31 March 2010.

Once again, please take note the submission fees cover the administrative cost and the travel subsidies for selected participants from developing countries to participate in the festival on 15 October 2010.

If selected, artists will be notified by the festival office to send in their high resolution files of images in DVD format for exhibition printing by the SIPF official printer. All applicants must submit a project submission online at www.sipf.sg and fill in your details accurately to ensure a successful submission. “FASA 2010” , merupakan suatu ilham yang dicetuskan oleh Dekan dan juga semua pensyarah Jabatan Fotografi & Pengimejan Kreatif, Universiti Teknologi MARA. Pameran ini menggabungkan hasil kreativiti kesemua pensyarah dari 3 kampus yang berbeza, iaitu, kampus Shah Alam, Selangor, kampus Sri Iskandar, Perak dan juga kampus Alor Gajah, Melaka. FASA 2010 ini, adalah pameran pertama yang dianjurkan dan melibatkan kesemua pensyarah fotografi.

Dengan bertemakan pengalaman diri sendiri atau “Self Expression” pameran ini menjanjikan kepelbagaian konsep dalam pengkaryaan sesuatu karya tersebut. Turut disajikan juga adalah eksplorasi pelbagai medium seperti pengunaan kepelbagai kertas dan juga teknik lukisan pada gambar. Pameran ini diharapkan akan memberikan pendedahan serta kesedaran kepada para pengunjung, pemerhati serta pengiat fotografi dan juga para pelajar di negara Malaysia ini.

Volker Hamann is well know to the Malaysian Art Community through his exhibition with Chin Kong Yee in April/May 2007 at Wei-Ling Gallery in Kuala Lumpur.

Volker Haman was trained as a stone-sculptor, but soon after his apprentice-sphip he decided to work as an artistic sculptor. Photography soon became the second leg of his artistic search. He has exhibited his work in various galleries in Europe.

During his Residency at Lost Generation Space he will offer workshops and search for the essence of Kuala Lumpur in new photographs.

Bombay Sapphire Art Projects 2009 (BSAP09) is a mini art festival with the aim to encourage and support artists in developing ideas and exploring new directions in their practice. This year’s programme offers an exciting range of exhibitions and projects that look at various forms of new media practices by emerging artists from Malaysia and Southeast Asia.

As they continue to push the boundaries of art making, this pool of young artistic talent have also sought alternative means and strategies for expressing and responding to their contemporary experience. The programme hopes to promote the exchange of ideas, cultures and practices among artists and their audience.

What is the "Dream Bag Challenge"?
Basically this is a world wide contest to design a new and original photographic bag. The contest started on Nov. 1st 2009 and will run till March 1st 2010 so you have 4 whole months to come up with a great idea and submit it to the challenge!

Who can participate?
Anyone with a great idea can participate in the contest providing you are 18 or older.

What do I have to do to participate?
You simply have to join the challenge on the site and follow the step by step registration.

Please note that we are looking only for original camera bag designs, so if you have a great idea, knock us off our feet!

We are not looking for existing bags and designs, such submissions will automatically disqualify.

Upgrades and changes to existing bags will be reviewed on a case by case basis.

How do I submit my idea?
You can draw, sketch or photograph a model, basically anything that will present your idea in the best and clearest possible way.
You can upload up to 4 images to the gallery and you can also link your entry to your face book or website if you wish to expand on your concept and design.

How will the winners be chosen?
The judging process will consist of three stages

First Stage:
Every approved entry will automatically be posted on the Dream Bag Gallery until March 1st collecting viewers votes (1 star being the lowest rating and 5 stars the highest rating)

Second Stage:
The 250 designs to receive the highest viewer ratings will be presented to an internal professional Kata committee. From these 100 the top 10 will be selected based on originality and merit and not on the viewer's votes.

Third Stage:
The selected top 10 designs will be presented to the impartial and professional judging panel listed on the site who will select the final winners.

What submissions do you reject?
We are not looking for existing bags and designs, so any submissions of this nature will automatically disqualify.

Adding an S to the D300

Although Nikon didn’t change what wasn’t broken, the number of small enhancements and additions to the feature set make it a much better and more robust camera overall.

Certainly, if you already own a D300, the changes (apart from perhaps the video recording) won’t make you run out and upgrade, but D200 owners for example, will find the D300S a major step forward as it improves on the D200 in every way.

Open Call Starts Now!!! - Singapore International Photography Festival 2010

In 2008, Singapore International Photography Festival attracted a whopping 6,600 public submissions of photographic work from photographers around the world. 12% of the total submissions were the most outstanding prints, which were shortlisted and exhibited across Singapore. The submissions were not restricted to any fixed subject or theme but selected works were grouped according to various themes by the Festival’s four curators.

Now, the 2nd SIPF 2008 commences with two categories for open call. The open-ended theme category continues with the purpose of unearthing new works and talents. This year’s festival incorporates a brand new themed category titled, ‘HUMAN: NATURE’ to address universal concerns faced by the world. The duality in the theme can be freely interpreted either as ‘Human Nature’ or ‘Human & Nature’. The ‘colon’ represents a relationship and a balanced ratio between Human and Nature. Thematically, this category is an ambitious call for creative interpretation on HUMAN: NATURE.

When one complains about human rights abuses in Malaysia, many Malaysians like to claim that at least we are better off than Burma. That is however not true for Burmese refugees in Malaysia. They may have escaped the horrors of living under the military rule of the junta in Burma, but here in Malaysia they live a life of fear all over again. As Malaysia is not a signatory of the Convention Relating to the Status of Refugees, Burmese refugees do not have rights in this country. Because of this, they are subject to all sorts of abuses, both by the authorities and fellow Malaysians.

Forced to hide in crammed apartments or makeshift encampments in forests, refugees live in constant fear of being detained by the Malaysian police, immigration officers and RELA volunteers. When caught, they are often abused, extorted for money, or sent to overcrowded and unhygienic detention centres. Sometimes they are even sold to human traffickers as slave labour or prostitutes. As the deplorable situation of Burmese refugees in Malaysia gains international attention, it’s high time for us to examine the human suffering we are causing.

NO REFUGE, presented by SUARAM and The Annexe Gallery, aims to highlight the plight of Burmese refugees through the works of five photographers: Greg Constantine (USA), Halim Berbar (France), Rahman Roslan (Malaysia), Simon Wheatley (UK), and Zhuang Wubin (Singapore). The works are photojournalistic documents of the living conditions of a people who are forced to flee to our hospitable country, but have yet to find refuge or hope here.

The exhibition will also mark the launch of a petition to the Malaysian Government to recognise refugees and to sign the 1951 UN Convention Relation to the Status of Refugees.

Parts of the proceeds of the sale of the photographs will be channeled to SUARAM's campaign to advocate for the rights of Burmese refugees.

Fashion, celebrity photographer Irving Penn dies.

NEW YORK – Irving Penn, whose photographs revealed a taste for stark simplicity whether he was shooting celebrity portraits, fashion, still life or remote places of the world, died Wednesday at his Manhattan home. He was 92.

The death was announced by his photo assistant, Roger Krueger.

"He never stopped working," said Peter MacGill, a longtime friend whose Pace-MacGill Galleries in Manhattan represented Penn's work. "He would go back to similar subjects and never see them the same way twice."

I Miss Him So Much

Five words that stand for hope and promise of a better future, through the provision of school boarding facilities for the children of rural Sabah. Words that demonstrate the collective will, compassion and care of those who seek a better life not just for themselves, but for those less privileged than they. Words that say, "Never again."

Asrama Donni

Asrama Donni is a hostel currently under construction in Kiulu, Sabah that will house 100 students so they don't have to walk daily through the jungle for up to 4 hours to get to school. This art sale is one of several initiatives to raise the RM251,000 that is needed to complete the hostel. It stands for one less concern that the underprivileged rural students of Kiulu, Sabah need to face; a stronger foothold that they can stand on to face the challenges of their lives tomorrow. Works from celebrated Malaysian artists including Awang Damit, Fauzin Mustafa, Wong Seng Tong, Romli Mahmud, Rafiee Ghani, MATAHATI, Fauzul Yusri and Jasmine Kok will be sold to help raise funds for Asrama Donni.

For its part, Galeri Chandan will host the artwork and donate all proceeds due to the gallery towards the construction and completion of Asrama Donni.

Corbis Corporation, that famous image provider company, is presenting a 2-day photo exhibition at The Annexe Gallery on Wed 30 Sep and Thu 1 Oct, 11am to 8pm, this week.

It's a two-day exhibition featuring 112 winning images from their Creatives Behind The Lens Asia 2009 competition held earlier this year.

So far the exhibit has travelled from Beijing to Hong Kong and will be making its final stop in Sydney later this year. The exhibit at The Annexe Gallery is its one and only stop in South East Asia!

Back for its sixth edition, the annual KOMAS Freedom Film Festival will be screening yet another harvest of local and international documentary feature and short films dealing with the topic of human rights, social and environmental justice. Held in four cities this year – KL, Penang, Kuching and Johor Bharu – FFF adopts the themes encompassed in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) which express our aspirations for genuine justice, peace, equality and democracy. As media partners for Art Expo Malaysia 2009, ARTERI is getting a booth at the art fair all to ourselves. It’ll be our HQ where we’ll be doing live coverage of the fair, as well as house our special project: Suitcase of Stuff!

So what is it? Think of it as an experimental exhibition, art garage sale, and lost luggage depot. We’re inviting artists and creative types to each contribute a suitcase filled with art objects, curiosities and mementos.

Little or large, empty or full, open or closed - this is your chance to play traveling salesman/woman, just as Marcel Duchamp did with Boîte-en-valise (1934 -41) - a neat briefcase packed with miniature versions of his famous works. The audience at Art Expo Malaysia is sure to come from all walks of life - submit a suitcase that will entertain, confuse and tempt viewers to take some of your baggage home with them.

Interested? Excited? Here’s all you need to know:

1. Just like airlines these days, our cabin/booth is only going to hold so much. Weight and dimensions of your suitcase should be restricted to standard check-in luggage. That means:

Weight: Max. 15kg

Size: 100 x 70 x 50cm

2. Erh, it also goes without saying that certain items are not allowed in your luggage such as: poisonous pets, artillery, weapons, explosives, biological and/or radioactive material, etc.

3. Other than that (and other commonsense disclaimers), the shape of your suitcase and how you choose to fill it is completely up to you.

4. Because we need all the visibility and love we can get, a luggage tag with ARTERI and http://www.facebook.com/l/ea1ae;www.arterimalaysia.com will be attached to each suitcase. (Don’t worrry, it won’t be huge.)

5. You can sell your suitcase or anything in it. Interested buyers will negotiate directly with you. ARTERI will not charge a fee or take a formal commission (cos’ we’re not dealers, yo!), but we will gratefully accept donations and gifts if your stuff happens to be very laku. The amount is up to you. No guilt and no obligations. ARTERI is not receiving any fee from Art Expo Malaysia - other than the free booth, this is a D.I.Y. effort.

The Annexe Gallery is proud to host EYES WIDE OPEN, a showcase of works by 28 notable photographers from Africa, England, Switzerland, China, Thailand, Japan, Germany, Bangladesh, Indonesia, Taiwan, Korea, Australia, Ireland, Italy, Sweden, Singapore and Malaysia (Azril K Ismail & Eiffel Chong). The selection comes from the inaugural Singapore International Photography Festival held (SIPF) last year which featured 900 images culled from a total number of 6,600 submissions from all over the world. The exhibition presents a wide-ranging kaleidoscope of unforgettable images – from portrait to landscape, from artistic to journalistic – that documents each photographer’s search for the real and the sublime.

Photos are for sale. A catalogue of selected photographs featured in the SIPF will be available for sale during the exhibition for RM40 per copy.

“Through the SIPF, we hope to showcase the photographic talents in Southeast Asia and Singapore, and highlight their outstanding works to a wider audience, beyond their respective countries,” said Festival Director Gwen Lee. “There are many talented individuals right in our own backyards waiting to be discovered. We don’t have to look far and wide. SIPF wants to be the platform to draw them out and bring them to prominence.”

September 2009: Updates from Singapore International Photography Festival Office

Hope you have been well & fine.

Currently we are planning the 2^nd SIPF opening on 10^th October 2010. A new website will be launched on 1^st Oct 2009 with online open call submission, a bimonthly newsletter to update the community of the festival status, and a SIPF Befrienders starting in Jan 2010.

This year 2009, SIPF has been invited to participate in China International Photography Festival. This is part of SIPF mission as a platform for photography to bring the works to more audiences. Very soon next week onwards, the exhibit will be traveling to Southeast Asia cities. The first stop is Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia before traveling to Manila, Philippines in Dec 09. Interested countries or collaborators to host the exhibition may contact the festival office directly at exhibition@sipf.com.sg

We are grateful for the support from The Annexe Gallery at Central Market, Kuala Lumpur to make this rorving exhibition possible. On 8th September2009 at The Annexe Gallery, the press conference will starts at 4pm before the official opening at 7pm. Pihak Kementerian Belia dan Sukan (KBS) dengan kerjasama Persekutuan Kebangsaan Berbasikal Malaysia (PKBM) akan menganjurkan Le Tour De Langkawi pada Mac 2010. Sehubungan itu, pihak KBS mempelawa para pelajar Fakulti Seni Lukis dan Seni Reka untuk menyertai pertandingan mencipta logo Le Tour De Langkawi secara tertutup.

Logo yang terpilih akan dipatenkan dan menjadi hakmilik mutlak KBS. Pemenang pertama akan menerima hadiah bernilai RM3000 dan dua penerima saguhati akan menerima hadiah bernilai RM1000 setiap seorang.

"Michal Macku - Glass (and) Gellages"

An upcoming Exhibition at WeiLing Gallery will feature a Czech Photographer for the first time in Malaysia. A current known contemporary artist and highly anticipated for his visual narrations... he had brought forward a new way in approaching photography techniques beyond traditional prints...

*Michal Macku (*1963), Czech photographer creates his works using his own photographic technique named Gellage and his discovery of this unique process has cemented his name in the history of contemporary photography. The technique ‘Gellage’ consists of the transfer of exposed and fixed photographic emulsion onto paper. This transparent and plastic material makes it possible to reshape and reform the original images, changing their relationships and endowing them with new meanings during the transfer.

Michal Macku began to make photographs in 1978. He graduated from the Technological Faculty of the Polytechnic Institute in Brno and the Institute of Art Photography, Prague; and after working for a number of years in research he taught at the Pedagogical Faculty of Palacky University in Olomouc.

Michal has been working as a full-time artist since 1992. He continues to explore and research the endless possibilities in photography. As he says in his own words:

“I am always seeking new means of expression and, step by step, I am discovering almost unlimited possibilities through my work with loosened gelatin. Photographic pictures mean specific touch with concrete reality for me, one captured level of real time. The technique of Gellage which I am using helps me to take one of these “time sheets” and release a figure, a human body, from it, causing it to depend on time again. Its charm is similar to that of cartoon animation, but it is not a trick. It is very important for me to be aware of the history of a picture and to have a sense of direct contact with its reality. My work places “body pictures” in new situations, new contexts, new realities, causing their “authentic” reality to become relative. I am interested in questions of moral and inner freedom. I do what I feel, and only then do I begin to meditate on what the result is. I am often surprised by the new connections I find in it. Naturally, I start out with a concrete intention, but the result is often very different. And there, I believe, lies a hitch. One creates to communicate what can not be expressed in any other way. Then comes the need to describe, to define.”

This will be the first time that Michal Macku will be showing in Malaysia and Asia.

Michal Macku’s first exhibition in Malaysia entitiled, "Michal Macku - Glass (and) Gellages" takes place at Wei-Ling Gallery from 6th April-30th April 2009.
